Camden Conference – Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective

February 21 @ 7:30 pm - February 23 @ 12:15 pm

Please join us for the 38th Camden Conference, entitled Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective, here at OceanView from February 21-23. We are delighted to serve as a livestream host for what promises to be an important and timely discussion in our Lunt Auditorium (74 Lunt Road, Falmouth, ME 04105).

The Camden Conference will be held at the Camden Opera House and streamed around the world. This will mark a first-time partnership between the Camden Conference and OceanView, and the 2025 Conference will present an exciting program of expert speakers on the persistent threats to liberal democracies worldwide.

The Camden Conference was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit, non-partisan educational organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues. Audience participation is a hallmark of every Camden Conference, and members of the livestream audiences will be welcome to pose questions for the speakers.

Registration is required.

If you are interested in attending, you will need to secure a ticket through the Camden Conference at camdenconference.org, not through OceanView.

About the 2025 Camden Conference:

For the past two decades, liberal democracies around the world have been under intense pressure from the resurgence of populist and nationalist movements. The result has been a decline in individual freedoms and rules-based international relations. The 2025 Camden Conference will look at some of the specific drivers that challenge democracies around the world, including immigration, religious nationalism, polarization and disinformation, and the failure of progressive reforms to remedy economic inequality. The decline of democracy threatens international peace and security, and it raises questions – can democracy as a form of governance survive? How can democracies be protected?

The keynote speaker will be Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, the crusading journalist who is the CEO of Rappler.com, a Philippine-based online news magazine best known for standing up to the former Philippine dictator, Rodrigo Duterte, and exposing his repressive policies that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Philippine citizens.

The Conference moderator will be David Brancaccio, the host of American Public Media’s Marketplace Morning Report.

Other speakers include:

  • Professor David Stasavage, the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Politics, and the author of The Decline and Rise of Democracy: A Global History from Antiquity to Today
  • Professor Matthew Goodwin, University of Kent, who has spoken and written about populism and democracy for years. His recent book, Values, Voice and Virtue was published in 2023.
  • Professor David M. Elcott, a Taub Professor at NYU Wagner (retired) and a SUNY Professor. He is the author of Faith, Nationalism and the Future of Liberal Democracy.
  • Professor Joshua A. Tucker, New York University. He is Co-Director of the NYU Center for Social Media and Politics as well as the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia.
  • Colin Woodard, Director of Nationhood Lab at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University. His books earned him a 2012 George Polk Award, and he was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist.
