A Guide to Retirement Community Planning
Retirement is what working professionals strive for throughout their entire careers. This next chapter of your life should be filled to the brim with indulgence, joy, and relaxation. After all, you’ve earned it! There is truly nothing that offers you the benefits of a blissful retirement like an active retirement community lifestyle, complete with amenities, social activities and so much more. As you embark on this journey, retirement community planning comes to the forefront to ensure you make the decision to best suit your needs.
OceanView at Falmouth has put together a guide to help you learn about the information to consider when planning your retirement.
What is Independent Living?
Independent living is simply a housing arrangement within a retirement community, allowing you to live independently without so many chores! OceanView at Falmouth offers varying housing options, including both cottages and apartments, with the option for assisted living and memory care as part of a long-term plan. Many who relocate to independent living communities are looking to make their lives easier by downsizing and letting go of the maintenance that comes with homeownership, but still able to enjoy a robust, fulfilling community.
What to Look for in a Community
When deciding on a retirement community, you want to consider what you want your lifestyle to be like. This is a major part of retirement community planning! Do the amenities offered align with your ideal living scenario? Some questions to ask could include:
- Is there a meal plan? If there is a meal plan, how does it work?
- What is the culinary experience like?
- Are there healthy dining options available?
- Are there fitness options such as classes, an on-site trainer and facilities?
- What are the opportunities for social activities?
- Do you get a good turnout of residents for social events?
- Is there a nurse or doctor available on campus, in case of an emergency?
- Can my pet join me?
- How close is campus to a grocery store, hospital or pharmacy?
- Will I need to be responsible for errands such as grocery shopping or picking up prescriptions, or will I have everything I need on campus?
- Are there cleaning services? If so, how often?
- Are there maintenance services? If so, how often?
Retirement Community Lifestyle at OceanView
Our campus is located on 80 acres of beautifully landscaped and wooded property overlooking the stunning Casco Bay and the Presumpscot River Estuary. We have a proud 30+ year history of combining environmental sustainability and nature, active living and peace of mind for the future. OceanView at Falmouth is truly retirement living for the 21st century!
Although residents within our community live independently, we offer a wide variety of services, campus amenities and fun activities for them to enjoy!
Concierge Advantage
We offer what we call the Concierge Advantage, meaning that we are at your service. Whether you need a piece of art hung, dining service delivery, or an extra housekeeping appointment to prepare for company, we’re just a quick phone call away.
Social Activities
OceanView’s social activities (under normal circumstances) include movie nights, trips into Portland, art classes, book groups, holiday gatherings, and so much more. Take part in our (currently outdoor) fitness classes, work with a certified personal trainer or exercise in our 4-season, heated salt water pool. With our Enrichment Academy, residents are able to pursue beloved interests, discover new ones, and meet new people. (At this time, they are being offered within the safety of Zoom presentations, but we will expand to live events as the Maine CDC guidelines permit.) OceanView’s Golf FORE Life program gives you complimentary access to two of the most beautiful courses in the area, so you can enjoy a round whenever you wish.
Dining Experience
At OceanView, our dining experience is truly remarkable, with several options to choose from. Enjoy weeknight dinners, the Saturday breakfast or our signature Sunday brunch in the Main Lodge Dining Room. Indulge in freshly baked pastries, homemade soups, grilled paninis, savory quiches, fresh salads and more from our Gazebo Grille. Finally, our historic Whipple Farmhouse is a seasonally-focused restaurant featuring a wide range of entrees, appetizers and desserts alongside a selection of wines and craft beers. All of our venues are offering delivery or take-out service at this time due to the Coronavirus. Pick up your meal and dine in the Gazebo or by the Stone Patio fire pit overlooking five acres of conservation land – either way, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience and a delicious meal.
Additionally, campus is located just 15 minutes from Portland, Maine’s largest (and most beautiful!) city. Walk through the historic Old Port, indulge in some of the best dining in the country, enjoy art and cultural venues, and attend sporting events.
