The flag and flagpole was generously donated by resident Mabel Gerquest, in memory of her husband Peter and all OceanView veterans who are no longer with us. A well- attended event was organized to celebrate this timely donation. With OceanView resident, Bill Gatchell as Master of Ceremonies, tributes and musical performances were enjoyed by a large crowd overlooking the Whipple Farmhouse and conservation land.

As part of the ceremony, Darren Henry with the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services attended and gave a speech in recognition of all veterans. Resident Tom Troeger delivered a beautiful invocation, poetry reading and benediction. A trumpeter played “To the Colors” as the flag was raised, and “Taps” as it was lowered to half-staff in memoriam. The OceanView Chorus sang “An American Hymn” and “America the Beautiful,” inviting the audience to join in. And resident Carl Barker played “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Yankee Doodle” on his harmonica!

The Flukes Ukulele Band concluded the ceremony with an Armed Forces Medley, as audience members from the different branches stood for their song. Delicious refreshments were served, including a berry-topped flag cake, as onlookers admired OceanView’s new Old Glory.
