“We had struggled with our parents after they went into retirement and didn’t want to burden our children in a similar way. Both our son and daughter had heard about OceanView and spoke very highly of it. Plus we loved Maine and the Portland area.
Downsizing is never easy, but the staff here was very helpful and volunteered to support us in moving from our home in Jackson, New Hampshire.
The security and peace of mind of not having to worry about the property is wonderful. We love the Whipple Farm Distinctive Dining and the Gazebo Grille, big plus. We cook most of our meals, but it’s nice to be able to go out for dinner and not have to drive!
There are many great things about OceanView, but probably the best is the friends we have made.” ~ Al and Lynn
When Ned Swain received the call asking if he’d supply wines for the President’s March dinner to be held in Portland, he excitedly jumped at this lifetime opportunity. Choosing wines to pair with the locally-sourced food that would be served and getting to decide what the President would taste, Mr. Swain says, was an experience he’ll never forget.
Mr. Swain, a self-proclaimed wine geek, has been interested in wines for many years and his passion led him to develop Devenish Wines, right here in Maine. Committed to bringing their customers fine wines from small-production winemakers and importers, Devenish Wines believes wine should taste like where it comes from – that in some way embodies the unique climate and environment from where the grapes were produced.
This past Wednesday, OceanView was lucky enough to host a wine tasting presented by Mr.Swain. Along with the samplings of wine, tasters were treated to complementing ‘bites’ artfully prepared by our chefs at our Whipple Farm Bistro, one of three distinctive dining options here at OceanView.
Attendees raved about the wines, delicious food and Mr. Swain’s extensive knowledge and experience. Be sure to be on the lookout for our next culinary event here at OceanView!
“I am very happy with my move to OceanView. My apartment was beautifully updated before I arrived and I have a lovely view of the gardens.
The staff and residents have all been very friendly and helpful during my transition, and have made me feel very welcome in the dining room and in the many programs that are offered.
I have joined many activities, including finding a swim buddy for the pool, and really enjoy the painting groups, the wine and cheese parties and movies. The new late seating for dinner on Wednesday nights is a great new option too!” ~ Isabel
Edith was 12 years old in Worms, Germany, when her father told her she did not have to go to school that day. Their synagogue had burned in an infamous event that later was called Kristallnacht (“Night of Broken Glass)” – the beginning of the Holocaust.
In the new book “Against All Odds: A Miracle of Holocaust Survival,” Edith tells about life as a Jewish girl in Germany, how her 8-year-old sister Suse was sent to England for safety but passage could not be found for Edith, and how her family moved to Duisburg when things got too bad in Worms.
Proceeds from the book benefit the Holocaust & Human Rights Center of Maine.
